Growing Tips

Growing & Caring

What are Carnivorous Plants?

Carnivorous plants are predatory plants that catch and digest small insects. They eat insects, spiders and depending on the type and size of the plant, it can also digest lizards, mice and other small vertebrates.

Carnivorous plants have specialised leaves that act as a trap. Many of the traps lure their prey with colours, hairs, nector or leaf extensions.

Once caught, the plant digests the prey, absorbing the nutrients.
These plants thrive in almost any environment as long as they remain moist and get enough light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I water my carnivorous plants with tap water?

This is not recommended.
These plants are sensitive to minerals.

The dissolved minerals in tap water will burn the roots.

Always use mineral-free water with your carnivorous plants, such as rainwater or distilled water.

Is trimming brown, black or dead leaves/traps necessary?

It is not necessary for the plant's health, but many growers like to keep it neat and clean, and trimming dead or dying growth is fine.

Keep in mind that for pitcher plants, the plant can still absorb nutrition from the tube trap even though it is browning or dying.

Do I need to add water to the pitchers?

Adding water to the plant will help retain moisture. The plant will replace these digestive fluids naturally, if kept in good conditions. Rather spray the plant. Most pitcher plants have hoods that act like umbrellas, and naturally shield the fluids, like the Nepenthes. Some, though, do have pitchers open to the rain.

Do they pose a threat to my pets?

No, carni plants are not dangerous to pets

Do I have to feed it?

The insects that a plant catches serves as fertiliser. So no real need to feed plants.

Do they bite?

They only trap insects with their unique traps. Humans & animals don't interest to them.

Do all traps close?

Only the Venus flytraps and Bladderworts has traps that gets triggered and will close.

How long will it take to get big?

Most of the plants reach maturity by 6 years.

How big will the Venus Flytrap get?

Some develop larger traps, others longer stems.
